Why typical evening speed matters more than the maximum

The busiest hours tell you the most about a plan. Here is how to read the numbers.

Between 7pm and 11pm, more people are streaming, gaming and video-calling than at any other time. That is when network capacity is tested, so it is the most useful time to measure speed.

When you compare plans, look for the typical evening speed alongside the maximum speed of the tier. It gives a more realistic picture of the experience you can expect.

What else affects your speed?

  • Your connection technology (FTTP, HFC, FTTC, FTTN, Fixed Wireless)
  • In-home wiring and modem placement
  • Wi-Fi standard and interference
  • The server or service you connect to
