Broadband FAQs
Your broadband questions, answered.
Plans, speeds, equipment, installation and billing — all in one place.
Plans & speeds
Can I get Eightport at my address?
Enter your address in the availability checker. We confirm the exact connection technology at your premises before connecting, and you will not be charged if we cannot provide the plan you chose.
Are there lock-in contracts?
Our home plans are month-to-month, so there is no lock-in contract. If you buy a modem outright and leave, you keep the modem. Check each plan’s Critical Information Summary for details.
What is “typical evening speed”?
It is the typical download speed customers on a plan can expect during the busy evening period, 7pm to 11pm. It is a more realistic guide than the maximum speed of the tier. Your own speed depends on your connection type, in-home setup and network conditions.
Which speed do I need?
As a guide: 25–50 Mbps suits browsing and HD streaming for one or two people; 100 Mbps suits busy households with several 4K streams and video calls; 500 Mbps and above suits large households, gamers, creators and anyone moving big files often.
Why can’t I choose the fastest plans?
The fastest tiers need a Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) or HFC connection. If your address uses another technology, the checker and our team will recommend the fastest plan your connection supports.
How long does it take to connect?
If your property already has an active connection, switching is usually quick. New connections or premises needing equipment or a technician take longer. We confirm your connection date once we have reviewed your application.
Wi-Fi & equipment
Can I use my own modem?
Yes. Most modern modems that support your connection type work with Eightport. Choose “bring your own” when you apply and we will send setup settings. If you are unsure, our team can confirm compatibility.
How can I improve Wi-Fi in my home?
Place the modem centrally and in the open, away from microwaves and thick walls. For larger or multi-level homes, a mesh Wi-Fi system spreads strong signal into every room. Our Home Wi-Fi page explains your options.
What is mesh Wi-Fi?
Mesh Wi-Fi uses two or more units working together to create one seamless network across your home, so you get strong signal in rooms a single modem cannot reach.
Installation
How long does it take to connect?
If your property already has an active connection, switching is usually quick. New connections or premises needing equipment or a technician take longer. We confirm your connection date once we have reviewed your application.
Do I need a technician?
Not always. If your premises already has a working connection box, it is often plug-and-play. If a technician visit is needed, we will arrange it with you and explain any charges before you agree.
What do I need to do on connection day?
Plug your modem into the connection point as shown in your setup guide, power it on and wait for the internet light. If a technician is booked, an adult needs to be home to give them access.
Billing
When will I be billed?
Your service is billed monthly in advance. Your first bill includes your first month and any one-off charges such as equipment purchased outright.
What if I am having trouble paying?
Please contact us early. We can talk through options such as payment arrangements. Our Financial Hardship Policy explains how we can help.
How do I update my payment details?
Payment details are managed in our billing system. Contact our billing team or use the billing link in My Account once billing is connected.
Moving & changes
I am moving house. Can I take my service with me?
In most cases, yes. Tell us your new address and moving date at least two weeks ahead and we will check availability and arrange the move to minimise downtime.
Can I change plans?
Yes. You can move to a faster or slower plan by submitting a request. Plan changes generally take effect from your next billing cycle.
