Connection types
Which connection do you have?
The technology at your address determines the speeds available. We confirm it before connecting.
- Fibre to the Premises (FTTP)
- Fibre runs all the way to your home or business — the most capable connection type and the one that supports the fastest tiers.
- Fibre to the Curb (FTTC)
- Fibre runs to a pit near your property, then existing copper covers the last short stretch.
- Fibre to the Node (FTTN)
- Fibre runs to a street cabinet (node); copper completes the connection. Speeds depend on the copper distance.
- Fibre to the Building (FTTB)
- Used in apartment buildings: fibre reaches the building’s comms room, with existing wiring to each unit.
- Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC)
- Uses the coaxial cable network (the kind once used for pay TV) connected to fibre.
- Fixed Wireless
- A rooftop antenna connects to a nearby tower — common in regional areas.
- Satellite
- Satellite service for remote locations where fixed connections are not available.
Speed guide
How fast is fast enough?
Estimates use each plan’s typical evening speed and ideal conditions; real-world times vary with your connection, devices, Wi-Fi and the server you download from. 4K streams estimated at 25 Mbps each.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Can I get Eightport at my address?
Enter your address in the availability checker. We confirm the exact connection technology at your premises before connecting, and you will not be charged if we cannot provide the plan you chose.
Are there lock-in contracts?
Our home plans are month-to-month, so there is no lock-in contract. If you buy a modem outright and leave, you keep the modem. Check each plan’s Critical Information Summary for details.
What is “typical evening speed”?
It is the typical download speed customers on a plan can expect during the busy evening period, 7pm to 11pm. It is a more realistic guide than the maximum speed of the tier. Your own speed depends on your connection type, in-home setup and network conditions.
Which speed do I need?
As a guide: 25–50 Mbps suits browsing and HD streaming for one or two people; 100 Mbps suits busy households with several 4K streams and video calls; 500 Mbps and above suits large households, gamers, creators and anyone moving big files often.
Why can’t I choose the fastest plans?
The fastest tiers need a Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) or HFC connection. If your address uses another technology, the checker and our team will recommend the fastest plan your connection supports.
How long does it take to connect?
If your property already has an active connection, switching is usually quick. New connections or premises needing equipment or a technician take longer. We confirm your connection date once we have reviewed your application.
Not sure which speed?
